Learn

Learn is a library of guided walkthroughs inside Lightdash. Each walkthrough teaches one feature, such as building a chart, creating a dashboard, sharing a space, or pinning content to a homepage, by having you click through the real product on sample data.

Open Learn

Click the Learn icon (a graduation cap) in the top bar, beside notifications and help. The library opens with the walkthroughs available to you. The first time anyone in your organization opens Learn, it asks for an organization admin to enable it. Once an admin has, every walkthrough is open to everyone in the organization.

Enable Learn for your organization

An organization admin opens Learn and clicks Enable Learn. Enabling does three things:

• Creates a project named Training (sample data), on a small built-in dataset.
• Gives everyone in the organization the permissions to practise in that project, and only there.
• Makes the admin who enabled it that project’s admin.

People who aren’t organization admins see Ask an admin to enable Learn until it’s enabled.

How walkthroughs work

Every walkthrough runs in your own fresh copy of the Training (sample data) project. Anything you create, change, or break happens in that copy, never in your real projects or in anyone else’s copy. The copy is removed when the walkthrough ends, and expires after 24 hours if you leave one unfinished. Starting a new walkthrough replaces any copy you already have. The walkthrough highlights the next control to click and moves on when you click it, so you learn where things are in the product rather than reading about them. When you finish a walkthrough you started from the library, you return to the library. In the training project, everyone can explore data, save charts, build dashboards, create spaces, and use the other features a project admin has, whatever their role in your real projects. Actions that would change the project for everyone, or reach outside Lightdash, are not available there: changing project settings or the warehouse connection, deleting the project, deploying, and sending scheduled deliveries.

The library

The library groups walkthroughs by subject, starting with Foundations, the basics every Lightdash user needs. Use the group tabs or Search the library to find a walkthrough, and the Up next card to resume one you started or begin the next recommended one. By default the library shows What you can do: walkthroughs for the features you hold in your real projects, through your organization role, your project roles, and any groups you belong to. To see walkthroughs for features beyond your current access, open Filter and choose Extra modules. Each extra module names the lowest role that includes it, for example Editor and above. Choose Coming soon in the same menu to show or hide features that don’t have a walkthrough yet. Your progress is saved to your Lightdash user, so it follows you across browsers and devices.

Remove the training project

Only an organization admin can delete the Training (sample data) project. Deleting it also removes every learner’s copy.

Enable Learn on a self-hosted instance

Add enable-learn to the LIGHTDASH_ENABLE_FEATURE_FLAGS environment variable and restart Lightdash. See feature flags. Learn needs Lightdash v2.238.0 or later. An organization admin then enables Learn for the organization.
